Why We Test the Water

Why We Test the Water

A friend of mine once bought her son his first fish tank. They picked out the gravel, a little castle, and six bright fish. Within two weeks, two of the fish were floating.

So she did what any of us would do. She went back to the store and bought two new fish. A week later, three more were gone. She replaced those too. She tried a different brand of food. She moved the tank away from the window. She started to wonder if she had just picked weak fish.

On her fourth trip, the young man behind the counter asked her one question: "Have you tested your water?"

She had not. When she did, the problem was obvious. The water was out of balance, and every new fish she added was landing in the same conditions that had made the others sick. The fish were never the problem. They were the evidence.

I tell this story because I see the same pattern in businesses every week. A good employee burns out, so we coach them. Another quits, so we hire a replacement. Someone struggles, so we send them to a training. Every one of those responses is about the fish. And every new person we bring in ends up in the same water as the last one.

That is why we start with the Trajectory Intelligence Assessment, or TIA. It tests the water. It measures the demands that put your people under strain, like Workload Compression and Decision Density, and the resources that buffer that strain, like Rewards & Recognition, Job Security, and Leadership Reliability. Then it shows exactly where pressure is turning into strain.

This does not mean the fish do not matter. They matter enormously. Good leaders care for their people one by one. But caring for the fish while ignoring the water means you will keep replacing fish, one after another, without ever fixing what is making them sick.

So the next time you find yourself asking what is wrong with your people, try my friend's fourth-trip question instead. Have you tested your water?
